The Last Supper

Luke 22:19-20 reads, "And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way, after the supper He took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.'"

This is the moment in the Last Supper when Jesus introduces the disciples to communion, using bread and wine to symbolize His body and blood, which would be broken and poured out for His disciples and for all of us.

Jesus knew that His time on earth would soon be ending. He already knew that He had been betrayed by Judas. He knew that He would soon be arrested and crucified. Yet, He was calm and focused on fulfilling His mission of salvation.

Sitting with His disciples, Jesus took bread and broke it, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." He then took the cup and said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."

These words were a reminder to the disciples that Jesus was about to make the ultimate sacrifice for them and for all of humanity. He was going to lay down His life so that we could have eternal life. He was about to take on the sins of the world so that we could be forgiven.

Through His death and resurrection, we are saved. Through His sacrifice, we can have a relationship with God. Because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, we now have the gift of salvation, and we have been set free from the power of sin and death.

What does all of this mean for us today? It means that we have been given a new life through Christ. It means that we are called to love others as Christ loved us, and to be a light in a world that can sometimes feel dark and hopeless.

As we take communion, we are reminded of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, and we are called to live our lives in a way that honors Him. We are called to love and show grace - to share the good news of Jesus Christ with those around us.

May we never forget the incredible gift that we have been given, and may we always try to live our lives in a way that honors the sacrifice of our Savior.
